"In Judaism, the pomegranate is a symbol of fertility,
relating to the first commandment of the Torah, to be fruitful and
multiply. In Arabic folklore and poetry, it is a symbol for the
female breast. In modern Greece, they represent agatha, the good things of
life."

These little still-life paintings are more personal than they possibly first appear to the objective viewer. Continuing with my love of symbolism I have adopted the pomegranate as a symbol of fertility or lack there of in my case. In the last three years I have undergone countless operations and much painful treatment for my illness and wanted to include this very personal and painful aspect of my life in my work. Pomegranate with Thorns captures this ‘thorn in my side’. |
