Home > Artworks > Nelson Mandela 1994 marked a significant change in South Africa’s history. It saw the end of the dark Apartheid years, the collapse of the National party’s rule, and the rise of a new ANC lead government with Nelson Mandela at its helm. This series signifies the media frenzy that surrounded the tumultuous birth of this new South Africa. The election was an emotional time. The conflict between the various parties resulted in widespread violence. The paintings in this series capture my own feelings of anxiety and claustrophobia. Just before painting this series I was involved in a bomb scare at a children’s peace rally, an incident which brought home to me the fact that nobody was safe. |
