                        University of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Equally weighted theoretical and practical components. Practical—a substantial body of painting, drawing and photography. Theoretical—a thesis focusing on two contemporary South African artists whose works deconstructed aspects of South African’s socio-political history. Being the recipient of the Graduate Assistantship Program provided me with the opportunity to lecture and mentor undergraduates in painting, drawing and Art History. Other responsibilities included maintaining the slide library and coordinating conferences and exhibitions

    Part-time project work at both Departments. e.g. working on the Zhejiang photography exhibition, an exchange
    program that was developed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sister state relationship between Zhejiang and
    Western Australia. Exhibition held 16-30 November 2007 at Governor Stirling Tower.

                             Position: Assistant Publisher

    Successfully project managed a book publishing program producing 40 books per year. This included managing the production of high quality art and photographic books such as Philippa Nikulinsky’s book Soul of the Desert  and Francis Andrijich’s titles Margaret River and Perth, to mention just a few.

                              Position: Project Manager, Editorial, Art & Production

    Worked on multiple publishing, marketing and publicity projects in a highly pressurised work environment. Managing a team of six graphic designers. Coordinated all design projects for book fairs, publicity events, sales conferences, launches, international book fares and other promotional events

                              Position: Project Coordinator, General Art & Design

    Evaluated effectiveness of programs, times and people. Overseeing the efficient tracking of all manuscripts, proofs, insets and artwork within the design and production department. Supervised a team of eight graphic designers and a number of freelance designers. Sourced, evaluated and selected artistic talent for photographic shoots or the illustration of book covers. Creation of artistic concepts, production outlines, pre-production planning and costings

 

PUBLICATIONS AND RESEARCH PAPERS

 

 

2005     Illustrations for Dianne Chase’s children's book Daisy Street,

            published by Fremantle Arts Centre Press

 

1997     Masters Thesis : A Visual Reinterpretation of Aspects of South

            African History by Women Artists: Penelope Siopis and Philippa  

            Skotnes. This work examined the way in which two contemporary

            South African women artists namely, Penelope Siopis and Philippa

            Skotnes, visually challenge in their paintings and prints respectively

            the conventional depictions of recorded South African history.

            Research funded by the Centre for Science Development (HSRC,

            South Africa) and the Graduate Assistantship program.
 

1994     Honours research paper: Penny Siopis’ Patience on a Monument –

            A Record of Misrepresentation. This paper explored the way in

            which Siopis breaks down the hierarchies which have been

            established in the representation of South African history.
